If we want to solve problems facing our country, we <\/span>must do it together<\/span><\/a>. Consensus enables groups to share power. Here are a <\/span>few tips<\/span><\/a> for finding consensus on very contentious issues:<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Remember, we\u2019re all people<\/span><\/a>. Rob Fersh, a Republican and founder of Convergence Center for Policy Resolution, said about his friend Kelly Johnston, a liberal and founding board member of Convergence, \u201cI can\u2019t begin to describe what an important bellwether and grounding Kelly represents for me\u2026 To be honest, when I read some of the things he has written, I wince, and I can\u2019t imagine how he could think that way. I then just have to remember, \u2018This is my friend, Kelly, a guy I know who\u2019s decent, who\u2019s honest, has integrity, is caring, shares so many values I share.\u2019\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Level the playing field<\/span><\/a>. Introduce and clarify the issue so that everyone has relevant background information. This ensures everyone is clear about the topic of discussion and questions that need answers.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. \u201c<\/span>Open out\u201d the discussion<\/span><\/a>. Before trying to solve anything, provide an opportunity and space for everyone to be heard. This allows all sides to hear each other and share the relevant information BEFORE engaging or making any proposals.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n
