You can make a difference by being aware of the phrases that perpetuate polarization and avoid using them.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.dictionary.com\/e\/words-divide-us\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not a boxing match<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 using words that put us in our corners does just that. Many people and industries benefit from telling us that politics is binary, but it isn\u2019t. Most people have a grab bag of political beliefs. Using only binary terms to describe ourselves and others perpetuates division. We all do it! It\u2019s the easiest way to describe our division and current state of affairs; it often feels like the truth. Keep an eye out for how often you put us all in our corners, and remember the immortal words of Johnny from <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dirty Dancing<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cNobody puts Baby in a corner.\u201d <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Who is benefiting? <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/harvardpolitics.com\/organized-polarize-cnn-fox-news-msnbc-roots-partisan-cable-television\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Media<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/articles\/why-social-media-is-so-good-at-polarizing-us-11603105204\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">social media<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/press.uchicago.edu\/ucp\/books\/book\/chicago\/U\/bo27527354.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">politicians<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> all benefit from division. We aren\u2019t saying that the individual coders, journalists, and political aides are out to destroy America, just that the systems are set up in a way that encourages divisive rhetoric. Since knowing is half the battle, be aware of how these systems work and give your attention (clicks, views, votes) to leaders in each field who are bucking the system and choosing solutions over division. <\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2020\/11\/disagreement-doesnt-have-to-be-divisive\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Keep it chill<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
