We can all do our part to combat toxic us vs. them animosity. One way is to ensure we aren\u2019t buying into ideas that align with our us vs. them narratives without questioning them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here are some ways to avoid simplistic takes and aim for more nuance:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

  1. Read a variety of sources.<\/b> Consume a range of local, national, and international sources. Include newswires like the AP and Reuters \u2014 outlets that never publish opinion pieces. Even many popular sources of news can <\/span>have significant bias<\/span><\/a>.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n
  2. Be skeptical.<\/b> Ask yourself: Does the evidence support the argument? At every point? Does all the evidence build to produce a sound conclusion?<\/span><\/li>\n
  3. Diversify thought.<\/b> We naturally gravitate towards people and news that are aligned with our views. It\u2019s important to see how other people are interpreting things.
