Nearly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thehill.com\/homenews\/campaign\/3694103-almost-1-in-5-say-politics-has-hurt-friendships-family-relationships-poll\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">one in five Americans<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> say politics has harmed a close relationship.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a follow-up to the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/buildersmovement.org\/pdc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polarization Detox Challenge<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, conflict resolution professional and our expert-in-residence Peter T. Coleman put together a short guide for mending politically strained relationships. This exercise culminates in taking a walk with the person you want to reconnect with.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And as Peter told us, \u201cThis worked for me!\u201d In <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/time.com\/6222633\/second-civil-war-us-how-to-avoid\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a 2022 piece for Time<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, he wrote about going for a walk with a neighbor who had very different political views \u2014 and connected this to the question of how we heal our larger divides.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So here are the steps for mending a politically frayed relationship.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Step 1: Get clear on what you hope to achieve<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We live most of our lives on auto-pilot, simply reacting to things. This activity, though, will require a little thinking and preparation.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Start by completing this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/5e6aa03359cab6521e8234e5\/t\/60adb6773be5564382583b47\/1621997175162\/Chapter+5+-+Assess+Your+Intentions+5-25-21.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reflection exercise<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It will help you clarify your intentions and goals for your walk-and-talk with your friend or relative. One obvious goal is to repair the tension in your relationship, but you may have others; for example, you may want to get up-to-speed with what\u2019s going on in their life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Step 2: Ask them for a walk<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ask your acquaintance if they\u2019d be willing to go for a walk with you in a few days. It\u2019s best if this is a side-by-side walk lasting at least 45 minutes. And, ideally, you\u2019d do this walk outside in nature during daylight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The choice of a walk isn\u2019t arbitrary! <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/buildersmovement.org\/pdc\/week-3\/day-4\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Science suggests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> engaging in joint movement together helps bond us.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Step 3<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span>Check your assumptions beforehand<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Today a major driver of political animosity is that many of us have distorted perceptions of each other. We often have large \u201cperception gaps\u201d: big differences in what we think people on the \u201cother side\u201d believe and what they actually believe. We often <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">assume <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we know what\u2019s driving others\u2019 behaviors, but we\u2019re often wrong \u2014 and that serves to divide us further.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To help you consider how your assumptions might be wrong, take this <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/perceptiongap.us\/the-perception-gap-quiz\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perception Gap quiz<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/perceptiongap.us\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">review the findings<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Step 4<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span>Aim to open a dialogue, not win a debate<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of us jump into politically charged conversations by trying to debate and win arguments, which usually ramps up tensions. For this walk, you\u2019ll aim for <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dialogue<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, not debate.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To understand the differences between dialogue and debate, review <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/static1.squarespace.com\/static\/5e6aa03359cab6521e8234e5\/t\/60adbc75c1b97019657c7f54\/1621998709606\/Chapter+7+-+Dialogue_v_Debate+5-25-21+%281%29.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this chart<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In short, dialogue involves learning about the other person and their reasonings instead of trying to score points and \u201cwin.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Step 5<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span>Conjure your best self<\/h3>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/topics\/computer-science\/social-modeling\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> tells us that our <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">social models<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (people we admire and emulate) often have a quiet but profound influence on us. Ask yourself, \u201cWho is the best person I know who shows tolerance and compassion in difficult situations? What is it about this person that allows them to do so?\u201d <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider reaching out to that person and asking for their advice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think about how you might respond to irritations in the ways they do. Considering this will help when you walk with your acquaintance \u2014 and help more broadly in your life.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Step 6<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: <\/span>Take the walk and ride the wave<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you get together for your walk, thank your acquaintance for coming. While walking, begin sharing \u2014 one person at a time \u2014 how you\u2019re doing these days, and what highs and lows you\u2019re experiencing. For now, avoid the issues that divide you. If they arise, just listen to your acquaintance and focus on the social connection.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After you break the ice and feel sufficiently at ease, ask them if they\u2019d be up for explaining <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">why<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> they hold a political position that\u2019s divided you. (Asking people to explain a position has been found to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/papers.ssrn.com\/sol3\/papers.cfm?abstract_id=4369067\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reduce toxicity in interactions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t challenge or interrogate them; just hear them out and allow them to talk fully through their thinking. They may expect you to debate and challenge them, but don\u2019t do that; just try to understand. If you let them talk it out more, they may begin to share some of their areas of uncertainty \u2014 and this will make it easier for you both to discuss the issue with more nuance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let it flow and see where the conversation goes.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What\u2019s next?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On its own, this exercise won\u2019t be enough to mend a strained relationship. The more deep-rooted the divide is values-wise, the more difficult mending it will be.
