{"id":2469,"date":"2024-05-08T22:32:52","date_gmt":"2024-05-08T22:32:52","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/buildersmovement.org\/?p=2469"},"modified":"2024-05-09T14:36:31","modified_gmt":"2024-05-09T14:36:31","slug":"navigating-clash-of-conflicting-college-protest-narratives","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buildersmovement.org\/2024\/05\/08\/navigating-clash-of-conflicting-college-protest-narratives\/","title":{"rendered":"Navigating the Clash of Conflicting College Protest Narratives"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No matter your views on the Middle East conflict, you may have found the recent events on college campuses \u2014 and people\u2019s reactions to them \u2014 confusing, overwhelming, or angering\u2026 or maybe all of those things. There are so many news stories, pundit takes, and everyday citizen observations, and many of these narratives conflict with each other.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As is often the case for contentious issues, many seem to be in separate realities \u2014 seeing events and behaviors through massively different lenses and filters. In short, it can be hard to tell what exactly is happening and what it means.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even for those of us with firm stances on such matters, we may wonder how to behave and engage with others. How do we ensure that we\u2019re not acting in ways that fail to recognize the humanity and rationality of others? How do we ensure we\u2019re not unintentionally behaving in ways that amplify destructive conflict?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We think of the question posed in <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/StartsWithUs\/status\/1680358944953204737\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Anatomy of Peace<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cEven if you are convinced you have been right in the positions you\u2019ve taken, can you say with confidence that you have also been right in your way of being toward [others]?&#8221; That can be a tough question to answer when one\u2019s emotions are involved.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We at Starts With Us struggle with these questions, like everyone. Like many organizations, Starts With Us includes people with different views on all kinds of issues and events. We wanted to share how our core values help us navigate these often scary, angering, and overwhelming times.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What values help us focus on problem-solving and avoid amplifying conflict?\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">At Starts With Us, our core values are <\/span><b>Curiosity<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, <\/span><b>Compassion<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and <\/span><b>Courage<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (which we refer to as the 3Cs). We\u2019ve invested in these values because they lead to connection, overcoming differences, constructive conflict, and a focus on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/buildersmovement.org\/citizensolutions\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">solutions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curiosity\u2026 even when we believe \u201cthey\u2019re wrong\u201d<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The world is a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/featuredcontent.psychonomic.org\/the-blooming-buzzing-confusion-and-filtering-of-visual-working-memory\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">complex place<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and each of us knows <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kevindorst.substack.com\/p\/ideological-bayesians\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">only pieces of the world around us<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. This is still true even when we\u2019re confident our views are highly accurate (or at least more accurate than our adversaries\u2019 views). As humans, we\u2019ll often get things wrong \u2014 whether about facts and events or about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/buildersmovement.org\/2024\/01\/25\/distorted-lens-how-perceptions-of-other-side-drive-toxic-polarization\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the people around us<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most of us have a fundamental curiosity about others and about the world. We know that interacting with other people and other ideas is how we learn about the world and how we grow as people. Curiosity is the radar we use to navigate this chaotic world \u2014 how we make sense of it. The opposite of being curious is being closed off; being narcissistic; being cloistered in our own world. To quote <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=PSL0zNREHAE\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Monica Guzman<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cIf you can\u2019t be curious across divides in a polarized world, you can\u2019t see the world at all.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Curiosity doesn\u2019t require you to change your beliefs. Curiosity can lead you to understand others better and help you find common ground. Often the process will show you that you\u2019re mistaken about what \u201cthey\u201d really believe. It can lead you to a deeper understanding of others\u2019 experiences, choices, and decisions. It may even shift your views in unexpected ways, making your stances more strong and reasoned and persuasive.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Compassion\u2026 even when it\u2019s hard<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even as we greatly disagree with each other, even when we see others as ignorant and harmful, it\u2019s possible to see the reasons why <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/kevindorst.substack.com\/p\/in-defense-of-epistemic-empathy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rational and compassionate people can arrive at very different views<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To name just one factor: Our modern media environment puts so many different takes and narratives at our fingertips; it\u2019s easier than ever for us to build different stories about the world around us.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Embracing compassion and empathy helps us navigate the treacherous shores of our divides. This doesn\u2019t require deep emotional connection with others; it can be a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterup.com\/blog\/cognitive-empathy\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">largely intellectual process of perspective-taking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and working through the elements that make up people\u2019s beliefs. <\/span><b>Above all, we can try to understand others\u2019 fears and anxieties;<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> often, those fears and anxieties are quite different from ours and are at the heart of our divergent views.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s easy for us to have compassion for people who are like us: the people we see as our allies. But <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">true<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> compassion asks much more of us. It asks us to ignore our perceptions of \u201cwho\u2019s with us\u201d and \u201cwho\u2019s against us\u201d and instead focus on the humanity of those before us, whoever they are. True compassion is not easy; it requires strength and courage.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We\u2019ll still continue to think some people are wrong, or misguided, or even malicious, but striving to see others\u2019 humanity, and seeing how <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">they<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">us<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 and how <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are like <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">them<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 acts as an antidote to destructive conflict-amplifying behaviors.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Courage\u2026 despite external and internal pressures\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We face both internal and external pressures to \u201cgo with the flow\u201d of polarized, us-versus-them thinking. People we see as on \u201cour side\u201d may use aggressive, polarizing language and we may feel pressure to avoid criticizing them. We may not want to risk alienating our allies and social groups. We may fear that striving for less polarizing, more humane ways of engaging \u201chelps the bad guys.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We may have internal fears of what it would mean to be curious about and compassionate to people we see as very wrong. Being compassionate and curious makes one vulnerable, and no one wants to be vulnerable these days; there is too much on the line.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.apa.org\/monitor\/mar03\/whenanger\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anger can simplify and clarify<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; it can give us a sense of control in uncertain, stressful times. There\u2019s a reason it can be so tempting and why it is often the path of least resistance. But anger, clearly, also has many downsides. Anger begets more anger \u2014 and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pmc\/articles\/PMC9358126\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anger leads to less nuanced and more extreme thinking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. In a very real sense, our animosity helps provoke in others <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/StartsWithUs\/status\/1654146390308577283\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the very things that upset us<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Creating a brighter, less toxic, less divided future requires more of us to be brave. It will require more of us to embrace compassion and curiosity: things that can seem soft and \u201ckumbaya\u201d but that actually require tremendous strength and fortitude. It will require more of us to escape our tendency <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/benjaminasimpson.com\/2021\/08\/18\/what-is-safetyism\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to want to be safe<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and to avoid things that disturb us and challenge us (this doesn\u2019t mean putting ourselves in harm\u2019s way; it means sitting with ideas and beliefs that form the roots of our polarization).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being brave in these ways is difficult \u2014 but it is what we must ask of ourselves if we want to be a part of changing things for the better and arriving at workable compromises and solutions.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Putting these values into practice as Builders<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/buildersmovement.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the new Builders initiative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we define a \u201cBuilder\u201d as \u201ca flexible thinker and constructive problem solver who recognizes the dignity of all people.\u201d To build a less toxic and more healthy culture, we can use <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/buildersmovement.org\/approach\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the 3Cs<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> as a framework to build a pathway to connection, understanding, and problem-solving.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One thing you can do immediately on this front is to ensure you read a wide variety of perspectives (we recommend <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.readtangle.com\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tangle News<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which compiles a range of views from across the political spectrum; here\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.readtangle.com\/columbia-university-campus-protests-israel-palestine\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a recent post of theirs on campus protests<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">). Often there\u2019s a focus on reading widely as a way to determine the truth. <\/span><b>But the other reason to read widely is to understand others\u2019 perspectives<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; to see the building blocks that make up people\u2019s worldviews \u2014 whether it\u2019s the Middle East conflict and related protests, or on any other issue.
