In other words, it\u2019s a cause not just for political centrists or moderates (as those words are often defined). It\u2019s a cause for everyone, including people with political views some would call extreme. So it\u2019s important to clarify what we mean when we use words like \u201cmoderate\u201d and \u201cextremist.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Toxic polarization is a problem largely caused by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/buildersmovement.org\/2023\/11\/07\/why-is-polarization-a-problem-isnt-it-normal-for-us-to-strongly-disagree\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">excessive contempt for our political opponents<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and excessive hostility when we engage with them. The problem isn\u2019t that we have very different opinions \u2014 that\u2019s a given for a society. The key problem is our highly negative views of each other and the toxic ways we interact across our differences.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We can see our divides in two dimensions:<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Differences in stances on issues<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: These are differences in our issue-related beliefs and opinions.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Constructiveness of engagement<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: This is about <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how we perceive and interact with <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people who disagree with us. We can have more positive, healthy ways of interacting \u2014 or more toxic, high-animosity approaches.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we use terms like \u201cmoderate\u201d and \u201cextreme,\u201d we usually refer to <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how people engage <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rather than <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what people believe<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A \u201cmoderate\u201d in this context is someone who <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/buildersmovement.org\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">engages respectfully and constructively<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 while an \u201cextremist\u201d engages with high levels of contempt and aggression (or even violence), is intellectually rigid, and is not willing to work with those with different perspectives.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Those two dimensions (<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">belief <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">versus <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how we engage<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) can be complex and intertwined. Our negative emotions can influence our beliefs \u2014 like when strong animosity toward the \u201cother side\u201d leads people to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/tompepinsky.com\/2020\/10\/28\/americans-are-already-set-to-conclude-that-the-2020-presidential-elections-were-rigged\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">distrust elections more than they otherwise would<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Believing an election to be illegitimate is <\/span><b><i>a belief that can be influenced by faulty, <\/i><\/b><a href=\"https:\/\/buildersmovement.org\/2024\/01\/25\/distorted-lens-how-perceptions-of-other-side-drive-toxic-polarization\/\"><b><i>overly pessimistic views<\/i><\/b><\/a><b><i> of one\u2019s adversaries<\/i><\/b><b>.\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, if a stance is held by people we strongly dislike, we might oppose that stance more \u2014 even if we might have seen it more favorably in less polarized circumstances.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Being in a conflict can degrade our thinking and lead to rigid, intolerant ways of thinking and behaving. For example, the book <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/heterodoxacademy.org\/blog\/coddling-of-the-american-mind\/\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The Coddling of the American Mind<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> argues that various faulty and simplistic ways of thinking have become common in left-leaning circles. One such idea is that life is \u201ca battle between good and evil people.\u201d On the right, we can also find simplistic ways of thinking: for example, some Trump supporters see any criticism of Trump, no matter how measured, as representing unfair political bias and malice.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is to say that, all around us, we can find evidence of how our divides have contributed to making our thinking more emotional and team-based, and less nuanced. <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We often see what we want or expect to see.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is one reason why you\u2019ll sometimes hear people in the depolarization and bridge-building spaces using \u201cextremism\u201d to refer to beliefs they see as contributing to our divisions. Trying to correct simplistic, divisive ideas is one path to making our discourse more nuanced and less contemptuous.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To reduce political and cultural toxicity, we think it\u2019s generally more effective to focus on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how we disagree <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and not <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what we disagree on<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A focus on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how we engage<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> helps us build a diverse coalition of people who hold very different political and cultural views but who, nonetheless, agree on the importance of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/buildersmovement.org\/2024\/07\/17\/thoughts-2024-nga-event-disagree-better\/?utm_source=Klaviyo&amp;utm_medium=campaign&amp;_kx=CSSXuCEp4ELevMCTfFunhA8xjjincS3ZJgjW03TXnDy-8serZATPzph-UKmz1438.TAzfUF\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">disagreeing in better ways<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>For people concerned about ideologies they see as harmful, this approach will help in that regard, too.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Our views of each other influence our beliefs \u2014 and this means that <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">improving how we engage with each other will, over time, reduce toxic and unhelpful beliefs<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Correcting distorted views and fostering a culture of disagreeing better will make people less likely to see their political opponents in highly pessimistic and catastrophizing ways.
