{"id":45508,"date":"2024-11-13T16:06:46","date_gmt":"2024-11-13T16:06:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/buildersmovement.org\/?p=45508"},"modified":"2024-12-10T16:07:02","modified_gmt":"2024-12-10T16:07:02","slug":"why-understanding-other-side-more-important-than-ever","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/buildersmovement.org\/2024\/11\/13\/why-understanding-other-side-more-important-than-ever\/","title":{"rendered":"6 Reasons Why Understanding Each Other Is More Important Than Ever"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For some of us, the title of this piece may already be <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/startswith.us\/2024\/09\/13\/efforts-to-reduce-polarization-can-trigger-people\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">irritating<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 even maddening.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re scared about Trump\u2019s election, being asked to understand the \u201cother side\u201d can seem a distant concern compared to your fears of what might happen during his presidency.\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re glad Trump won, you may be tempted to say, \u201cWe\u2019ve won; we don\u2019t need to listen\u201d \u2014 or maybe you\u2019re angry about the pushback you see on the \u201cother side.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As was the case before the election, many of us fear what the \u201cother side\u201d wants and what they\u2019ll do. As we often emphasize, no matter your political beliefs, you can join the movement to detoxify our politics. But we realize that when emotions are high, it can be hard to see that as a priority \u2014 and we won\u2019t ignore that fact.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, we do want to make the case that understanding each other is more important than ever. This is because: <\/span><b><i>When we fail to understand each other, we push each other away and amplify our divides.\u00a0<\/i><\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are some reasons that will help you better understand this point.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#1: We have distorted views of each other<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many of us have<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/democracy.psu.edu\/poll-report-archive\/americans-not-only-divided-but-baffled-by-what-motivates-their-opponents\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">distorted views<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of those on the \u201cother side,\u201d and this amplifies hostility. Some speak as if Trump voters are motivated largely by bigotry and authoritarianism. Some frame Democrats as supporters of all manner of far-left-associated ideas, including socialism and Marxism, or \u201cabolish police\/prisons\u201d-type ideas.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We must remember that a big factor in our political preferences these days is not so much <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">support for everything on \u201cour side\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> but <\/span><b><i>dislike and fear of the \u201cother side<\/i><\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> This helps explain why political groups can be so varied in their views and motivations.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One foundation of our divides is our<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/10.1073\/pnas.2001263117\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overstated views of how much \u201cthey\u201d hate us<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 which can become a reason for us to fear them more, and so on.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#2: Arriving at opposed views is easier than we think<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We must try to see that ending up on either side of the chasm separating us is<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.kevindorst.com\/stranger_apologies\/rp\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">much easier than we think<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The political narratives we embrace can depend on where we live, the people around us, the media we consume, and specific issues we\u2019ve come to care about, among other factors.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Think of our two main political narratives as two streams forming at the top of a mountain. When rain falls, water will flow one way or the other due to various initial conditions and obstacles. Some might go directly into the stream; some will find their way via unexpected paths and backchannels. And once you\u2019re in that stream, seeing or understanding that other path can be hard. The various ways the other stream formed and flows is hard to understand: it\u2019s on the other side of the mountain, obscured from our view. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be clear, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we aren\u2019t saying that every stance is equally rational<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; we\u2019re only talking about the ease with which we can find ourselves on opposite sides of that mountain.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#3: Ignoring our opponents\u2019 concerns drives them further away\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s critical \u2014 no matter our fears, concerns, or political goals \u2014 to make an effort to see each other more clearly and resist the temptation to always assume the worst about \u201cthe other side.\u201d Embracing humility and curiosity about what our fellow Americans want can help close this widening chasm.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A few specific points:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anti-Trump Americans should see that supporting Trump<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/heterodoxacademy.org\/blog\/research-summary-race-and-the-race-for-the-white-house-on-social-research-in-the-age-of-trump\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">doesn\u2019t equal racism or bigotry<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They should try to understand Trump voters&#8217; many defensible concerns: this can include <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.betterconflictbulletin.org\/p\/bcb-123-how-progressivism-turned\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">dislike of liberal-associated stances<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, concerns about<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.liberalpatriot.com\/p\/the-fox-news-fallacy\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">illegal immigration<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and views that Trump and Republicans have been<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cjr.org\/special_report\/trumped-up-press-versus-president-part-1.php\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">treated<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/theintercept.com\/2019\/01\/20\/beyond-buzzfeed-the-10-worst-most-embarrassing-u-s-media-failures-on-the-trumprussia-story\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">unfairly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> by liberal-leaning institutions.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pro-Trump Americans should try to see the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2024\/10\/26\/politics\/pennsylvania-haley-voters-trump-harris\/index.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reasons<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> why many Americans \u2014 and not just those with liberal-associated views \u2014 are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/trump-is-still-embarrassing-his-defenders\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">concerned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about Trump and see him as<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.axios.com\/2024\/10\/11\/mark-milley-trump-fascist-bob-woodward-book\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a serious threat<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. They should try to understand the view that Republican-side denial of the 2020 election results <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nationalreview.com\/corner\/why-didnt-the-democrats-steal-it-this-time\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">was wrong and dangerous<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We will of course strongly disagree on these matters, but <\/span><b><i>when we act as if all of our opponents\u2019 concerns are completely irrational, we amplify our divides<\/i><\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When we contemptuously ignore each others\u2019 concerns, we communally <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.scientificamerican.com\/article\/how-gaslighting-manipulates-reality\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">gaslight<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> each other.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#4: Groups are not all-the-same monoliths<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We must keep in mind our opponents rarely support everything we associate with \u201ctheir side.\u201d These days, many political choices are not so much about supporting \u201ctheir side\u201d as about pushing against what they\u2019re afraid of. This helps explain why political groups can be so varied in their views and motivations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Often our negative views of specific leaders can result in us harshly judging the entire \u201cother side.\u201d But it\u2019s important to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/startswith.us\/2024\/10\/23\/four-reasons-to-distinguish-politicians-from-voters\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">separate our views of politicians from those of their voters<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Remembering that groups are complex and varied can help us make that distinction.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#5: Insults further divide us\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you find yourself describing \u201cthem\u201d in the worst possible light \u2014 if you refer to your opponents as<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.the-independent.com\/us\/rose-mcgowan-democrats-cult-fox-news-b1838024.html\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cult<\/span><\/a><a href=\"https:\/\/www.newsweek.com\/how-deprogram-cult-donald-trump-opinion-1978684\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">members<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.vanityfair.com\/news\/2021\/01\/can-trumps-cult-of-followers-be-deprogrammed?srsltid=AfmBOor-JcIbiqvOJwfc6veqiFjYvCz4phZJzT4mpKNB0ZcUpvRlrNg2\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">brainwashed<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, or use<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.wsj.com\/tech\/elon-musk-woke-mind-virus-41576aa6\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">similar insults<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u2014 <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you must see that\u2019s how you<\/span><\/i><a href=\"https:\/\/thewholestory.solutionsjournalism.org\/theres-another-way-to-do-conflict-a-book-release-chat-with-amanda-ripley-ee21b38c6518\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drive the wedge further between us<\/span><\/i><\/a><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> That is how you make your opponents see your group as the divisive \u201cbad guys.\u201d In such a tone-deaf battle, no one wins.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">#6: Hostility can lead to more extreme beliefs\u00a0<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s true we have serious disagreements on many issues \u2014 but it\u2019s also true that<\/span> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.powerofusnewsletter.com\/p\/interview-daniel-stone-on-undue-hate\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cundue hate\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> acts as a conflict amplifier. <\/span><b>And hostility can even influence our beliefs<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: it can lead us to<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nature.com\/articles\/s41562-020-01012-5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">take more extreme stances<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. It can even make us <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/startswith.us\/2024\/10\/02\/more-polarization-more-election-distrust-avoid-temptations-to-call-lost-elections-rigged\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">more likely to distrust election results<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> we\u2019re unhappy with.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our inability to understand each other has transformed many issues into rigid \u201cgood vs. evil\u201d choices. Hostility can act like a centrifuge, pushing our ideas to the outside and making conversation and compromise feel impossible.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The future is not set<\/span><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Our emotions can lead us to arrive at overly certain and dark views of the future. As psychologist Adam Grant wrote,<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2024\/11\/12\/opinion\/donald-trump-election.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cIf you think you know how the next four years are going to play out, you\u2019re wrong.\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> (Grant writes from an anti-Trump perspective, but no matter your politics, we hope you see his main point.) Reaching for certain and pessimistic predictions amplifies the cycle of conflict, pushing both sides into an<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beyondintractability.org\/essay\/escalation\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">arms race<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of emotion and action.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">With more understanding of each other, we\u2019ll reduce the demand for divisive political approaches. We\u2019ll disagree in better ways. At the very least, we\u2019ll avoid further widening the rifts between us. Despite what our instincts may tell us, seeing the best in each other does <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mean abdicating our principles.
