But it doesn\u2019t have to be this way. We can help change the culture by encouraging leaders to act in more positive and respectful ways \u2014 to act like <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/buildersmovement.org\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Builders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. A <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Builder<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> is someone who solves problems constructively, thinks flexibly, and respects the dignity of all people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Most Americans want less political toxicity \u2014 but change starts with speaking up. Every time you make your voice heard, you create <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/startswith.us\/2024\/12\/19\/why-internal-reflection-key-reduce-political-toxicity\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ripples of positive change<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. The people you influence will, in turn, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/penntoday.upenn.edu\/news\/damon-centola-tipping-point-large-scale-social-change\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">influence others<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. <\/span><b>Your voice is probably more powerful than you think!\u00a0<\/b><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are three ways you can encourage better behavior from leaders:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ol>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Share your opinions in news outlets<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Engage with leaders on social media<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Contact leaders directly by phone or email\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ol>\n<h3><b>Some tips before you start<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we refer to \u201cleaders,\u201d we don\u2019t just mean elected leaders. It can be anyone you think has political influence \u2014 like a community leader, a corporate leader, or influential public figure.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We suggest focusing on <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">local and regional <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">leaders and issues. National leaders get so many messages and coverage that it can be harder for your message to stand out. Local leaders, on the other hand, often have a closer connection to their region and constituents. (That said, if you want to write something about a national topic, don\u2019t let us stop you!)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Criticism is often more effective when it <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/record\/2002-13768-001\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">comes from someone seen as an ally<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. For example, Democrats are more likely to listen to criticism from other Democrats than from Republicans (and vice versa).\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When offering criticism, speak respectfully and avoid personal insults.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Writing for news outlets<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Publishing your opinion in a local newspaper can have a big impact. It sends a message to leaders \u2014 but also, just as importantly, to the broader community.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are two main ways to share your opinion:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">letter to the editor:<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> A short piece (1-3 paragraphs) focused on recent topics covered by the outlet.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Op-ed: <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are longer pieces (~500-800 words) that explore timely issues in greater detail. We need more leaders like you who focus on problem-solving!\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Example of constructive criticism:<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><br \/>\n<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cI agree with your overall points, but I think the way you\u2019re talking about the \u2018other side\u2019 is too divisive. I appreciate their willingness to work with their political opponents and focus on solutions.\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Script for constructive criticism:<\/b><b><br \/>\n<\/b><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHello, my name is [Your Name], and I\u2019m a resident of [City\/Town]. I wanted to share my concerns about [specific issue].
