We are the <\/span>Builders Movement<\/span><\/a>. What, you may ask, is a Builder? <\/span>A Builder is <\/b>a flexible thinker and constructive problem solver who recognizes the dignity of all people<\/i><\/b>.<\/b><\/p>\n

Here are three habits all Builders share:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Habit #1: Reject violent absolutism and dehumanization<\/h3>\n

A Builder understands that progress doesn\u2019t come from seeing the world in black-and-white terms or reducing others to caricatures. Violent absolutism \u2014 the belief that one\u2019s side is wholly good and the other side are wholly bad and irredeemable (or even evil) \u2014 is a toxic mindset that fuels division. Dehumanizing those who think or vote differently strips away the possibility of dialogue, understanding, and compromise. Builders actively reject these behaviors \u2014 even as they may have passionate disagreements with and judgment of other people. When they see aggressive and dehumanizing behaviors on the \u201cother side,\u201d they don\u2019t use that as a reason to pin all the blame on them or give up on improving the situation. They recognize that they can play a role in improving the situation by focusing on what they have control over: their and their allies\u2019 approaches and behavior.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Habit #2: Balance passionate convictions with critical thinking.<\/h3>\n

A Builder can hold their beliefs with passion \u2014 even with frustration and anger \u2014 while also being dedicated to thoughtful reflection, nuance, and humility. It\u2019s not enough to care deeply about an issue \u2014 a Builder seeks to understand the complexity and nuance behind it. They question their assumptions and prejudices, seek out diverse perspectives, and remain open to new ways of looking at problems \u2014 even when that examination challenges their views. This dedication helps Builders avoid the pitfalls of rigid ideology and dehumanization.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Habit #3: Take action to work across lines of difference<\/h3>\n

A Builder doesn\u2019t shy away from differences \u2014 they embrace them as opportunities for growth and problem-solving. Instead of retreating into their comfort zone or dismissing those with opposing views, a Builder actively seeks out dialogue across lines of difference. Builders recognize that when you don\u2019t try to work with the \u201cother side,\u201d you may be at risk of only creating short-term changes \u2014 that those changes may be rolled back or even entirely reversed when one\u2019s opponents gain power. They understand that lasting solutions must involve all stakeholders, even if some stakeholders have views or ideas they find repugnant. They approach challenges with curiosity and flexibility, solving problems in innovative and creative ways that benefit the maximum number of people.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n
