The conversation shifts from light and friendly to tense and uncomfortable \u2014 highlighting how political differences can feel like a shock, even among people we think we know well.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DG4CV9iAm7J\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Watch the scene here<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scene hit a nerve. It was talked about on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@theviewabc\/video\/7478835376182922538\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The View<\/span><\/i><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/davebriggstv\/reel\/DG58KjQOofJ\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">other shows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, and by people across the political spectrum. We did <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DG4CV9iAm7J\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a post about it<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which got a big response from our community. Many people called it a \u201cgreat depiction of reality\u201d and praised the writing for capturing just how uncomfortable our divides can make our social interactions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Why Political Divides Feel So Personal<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The scene reflects a deeper truth about political polarization: we often assume that the people we like or love share our political views. It\u2019s natural to believe that if someone seems like a kind, thoughtful person to us, they couldn\u2019t possibly support the \u201cother side.\u201d \u00a0If we find out they do, it can feel like a betrayal \u2014 or at least very confusing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/buildersmovement.org\/2024\/11\/13\/why-understanding-other-side-more-important-than-ever\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">previous post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, we compared our political narratives to two divergent streams flowing down a mountain. Once you\u2019re in one stream, it\u2019s hard to understand how someone could end up in that other, very distant-seeming stream. It can be a dizzying, unpleasant feeling. The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">White Lotus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> scene summons that feeling: how we can have so much in common with other people yet still see the world so differently.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>Both Sides Make Assumptions<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After the scene aired, some reactions suggested that such reactions only happen on the left. (One comment on our post read \u201cThis is why Democrats lost.\u201d) But this dynamic is present on both \u201csides\u201d in America (and for conflict in general). Many of us make assumptions about the people close to us \u2014 and then are shocked and disappointed when we learn our assumptions are wrong. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many people, on both sides, struggle with how such realizations will impact their relationships. <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cIf I think their political stances and votes are causing harm, how can I stay connected and close to them?\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> It\u2019s hard to separate political actions from our views of morality and ethics. <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But the truth is that the \u201cother side\u201d often feels the same way about <i>us<\/i>. They also can perceive immense harm being done by us. They may even believe <i>they <\/i>are justified in cutting ties with us for similar reasons. <\/span><span>For example, there are many ways people on both sides of immigration-related issues can <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/buildersmovement.org\/2025\/02\/19\/bridging-immigration-divides-without-contempt\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span>see their opponents as doing harm<\/span><\/a><span>. (Kurt Gray\u2019s book <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/politics\/2025\/01\/27\/outraged-book-kurt-gray-morality-harm\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><i><span>Outraged!<\/span><\/i><\/a><span> takes a deep dive into how we can reach such different views of who the \u201cbad guys\u201d are.)\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This cycle of righteous moral judgment is self-reinforcing. Our <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thefulcrum.us\/bridging-common-ground\/political-language-polarization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">fears and distrust<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of each other keep rising \u2014 and that in turn leads to more justification for taking aggressive actions to defeat our \u201cenemies.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3><b>The Power of Focusing on the Person\u00a0<\/b><\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When we have <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/buildersmovement.org\/2024\/01\/25\/distorted-lens-how-perceptions-of-other-side-drive-toxic-polarization\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">distorted beliefs about the \u201cother side\u201d<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this can lead to more contempt and toxicity. One way to reduce that toxicity is to focus on our relationships. Instead of thinking, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cHow could someone I respect believe this?\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> try asking, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cWHY do they believe this?\u201d<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> When we start from a place of curiosity and respect, it becomes easier to see the humanity behind someone\u2019s political stance.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A commenter on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.instagram.com\/p\/DG4CV9iAm7J\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our post<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> summed this up beautifully:<\/span><\/p>\n<p style=\"padding-left: 40px;\"><em><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you find out that family or friends voted for Trump, instead of freaking out and becoming &#8220;disappointed&#8221; in this person and feeling like &#8220;you never really knew them,&#8221; think instead: I love this person, I KNOW this person, I KNOW they&#8217;re not morally flawed, so there must be something I&#8217;m missing. There&#8217;s something I&#8217;m not seeing.<\/span><\/em><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To be clear: this doesn\u2019t mean you have to agree with everyone. It doesn\u2019t mean you have to refrain from debating or criticizing anyone. And yes, sometimes you will decide that someone\u2019s views are so against your values that you can no longer be close to them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But sometimes we\u2019ll find that the people in our lives have more defensible, rational reasons for their choices than we assume. Sometimes we\u2019ll find that their stances are built on <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/thefulcrum.us\/bridging-common-ground\/political-language-polarization\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">overly pessimistic and fearful views<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of the \u201cother side\u201d \u2014 just as <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> views of<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> them<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> may be overly pessimistic.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">White Lotus<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> scene struck a chord because it reflected something real about human relationships. Political differences can feel like betrayal \u2014 but they don\u2019t have to.
