Both are interested in reducing toxic political divides.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Does it feel like many people online are purposefully trying to make you angry? In some cases, they are. Content designed to outrage you is called \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.urbandictionary.com\/define.php?term=Rage%20Bait\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">ragebait<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d a cousin of \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/sproutsocial.com\/glossary\/clickbait\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">clickbait<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d Ragebait seeks to provoke anger for <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.wired.com\/2017\/02\/veles-macedonia-fake-news\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">financial<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> or political gain \u2014 or even just to get attention for attention\u2019s sake.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In non-political contexts, ragebait can be relatively <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.rollingstone.com\/culture\/culture-features\/what-is-rage-bait-influencers-making-people-angry-1234976621\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">harmless or silly<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, like purposefully <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.tiktok.com\/@meredithduxbury\/video\/7347765544961068319?_r=1&amp;_d=secCgYIASAHKAESPgo8OoeLF6ro1nHjdiZpxnym2dEwUIPdtJTyZCyLXdDWe5HwtOd1ZsEFY8NA9JHB7wmwXXjIDGqF9zIJk2%2FlGgA%3D&amp;u_code=ea87d30127g3hh&amp;share_item_id=7347765544961068319&amp;timestamp=1725149484&amp;utm_campaign=client_share&amp;utm_source=short_fallback&amp;share_app_id=1233\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">putting on too much makeup<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to rile people up. But there are much more harmful forms that involve offensive statements, deceiving imagery, and misleading information.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For example, a recent BBC investigation found that some users on X were <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.com\/news\/articles\/cx2dpj485nno\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">being paid thousands of dollars by the site<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for sharing content, which included incorrect information, AI-generated images, and unfounded conspiracy theories. The content spanned the political spectrum: some of the accounts shared conservative-leaning views, and some shared liberal-leaning views. There can be a major financial incentive to get clicks \u2014 and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/phys.org\/news\/2024-10-rage-clicks-political-outrage-fuels.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">anger makes clicking and sharing more likely<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Anger Isn\u2019t Necessarily the Problem<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Outrage isn\u2019t always bad, of course. Anger emerges when people<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/citeseerx.ist.psu.edu\/document?repid=rep1&amp;type=pdf&amp;doi=042ad9e00c7ad1e7a20677e8fd342d128da12da5\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> feel thwarted from reaching their goals and want to take action<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to change their circumstances. This desire to affect change can be a vital force in political and social movements. Righteous outrage helped fuel movements for civil rights, labor protections, and public health initiatives like the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/myscp.onlinelibrary.wiley.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1207\/s15327663jcp0803_07\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">campaign against smoking<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. When we feel a moral violation has occurred, it\u2019s natural \u2014 and often important \u2014 to speak out.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Given <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/drive.google.com\/file\/d\/10-0RyTYiti9c3dThP4Awu704nRo2_Igf\/view?pli=1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">outrage\u2019s success at garnering more social media attention<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, inciting moral anger has become a primary tactic for both good-faith activists and bad-faith ragebaiters. Some might perceive outrage-inducing content as genuine activism, while others might view it as an attempt to garner online engagement for insincere, profit-driven (or division-driven) reasons. It can be difficult to objectively say what\u2019s ragebait and what isn\u2019t. One person\u2019s ragebait may be another person\u2019s morally righteous reporting. Your anger doesn\u2019t necessarily mean someone is unethically trying to manipulate you.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But when you feel outraged, that can be a sign to think more about what angered you. Find out who created it and what their intentions might be. Is this creator someone who frequently posts outrage-inducing content? Does this seem like a video\/comment that\u2019s mainly trying to get a hostile reaction out of you, as opposed to educating you? <\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When you think something online is aimed at unethically \u201crage farming,\u201d you can decide, &#8220;I&#8217;m not going to share this because I don&#8217;t want to unnecessarily add to our toxic divides.&#8221;\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Ragebaiter Tactics<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many ragebaiters aim to provoke <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">moral outrage<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, which is <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sciencedirect.com\/science\/article\/pii\/S002210311730046X#:~:text=Highlights&amp;text=Moral%20outrage%20is%20anger%20about,(i.e.%2C%20harm%20done).&amp;text=Anger%20about%20moral%20violations%20arises%20independently%20from%20empathy%20with%20the%20victims.\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">distinct from standard forms of anger<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/0956797613486988\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">drives people to punish and condemn wrongdoers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. Some ragebait will seem aimed at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/psycnet.apa.org\/doiLanding?doi=10.1037%2Fxge0000132\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">increasing dehumanization<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> towards wrongdoers and political opponents as a group. Unethical ragebait can be seen as amplifying toxicity and conflict.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Potential ragebait tactics:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Misleading or exaggerated headlines<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Emotionally charged language<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Exaggerated, unrepresentative, or distorted examples (for example, acting as if an individual\u2019s bad behavior is representative of an entire group)<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Polarizing \u201cus vs. them\u201d framing<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Quotes or images that appear to be \u201cmissing pieces of the puzzle\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Information that has been proven false.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h3>How Media Algorithms Fuel the Fire<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Social media platforms often reward the most provocative content. Algorithms are tuned to promote engagement \u2014 clicks, shares, comments \u2014 not accuracy or empathy. This is part of the reason why ragebait spreads so quickly.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ironically, despite <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pnas.org\/doi\/full\/10.1073\/pnas.2024292118\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the popularity of divisive content<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, most people say they\u2019d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/10.1177\/17456916231190392\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">prefer if that type of content didn\u2019t do so well<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. People seem to recognize the existence and dangers of ragebait, even though they might struggle to resist it when it\u2019s put right in front of them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>How To Resist Ragebait \u2014 Even When You&#8217;re Angry<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are a few ways you can try to distinguish between unethical ragebait and more standard, reasonable types of reporting or activism:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Pause before reacting.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Ask yourself: \u201cIs this trying to inform me \u2014 or inflame me?\u201d<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Interrogate the source.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Is the event in question a representative and meaningful one, or a one-off and\/or fairly rare event that\u2019s being used to provoke rage?<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Train your feed.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Mute, unfollow, or mark \u201cnot interested\u201d on content that consistently amplifies outrage. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/osf.io\/preprints\/psyarxiv\/acbwg_v1\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Research shows<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that doing so can reduce animosity and improve your social media experience.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Respond constructively.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Share solutions and bridge-building efforts, not just takedowns and hot takes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Recognizing these features of ragebait helps you separate emotionally manipulative content from legitimate reporting or activism. When you pause to assess intent, scrutinize sources, and curate your feed, you\u2019re not just protecting your own mental health. You&#8217;re avoiding adding fuel to our toxic divides \u2014 and you&#8217;re depriving unethical ragebait-makers of attention, and maybe even income. The more we practice this discernment, the harder it becomes for ragebait to hijack our attention and influence our emotions.<\/span><\/p>\n<h3>Don\u2019t Take the Bait<\/h3>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s easy to feel angry when you encounter something that seems absurd or offensive online \u2014 especially if it touches your identity or values. That\u2019s part of being human. But in today\u2019s climate, we need to be mindful of how often that outrage is coaxed or provoked for clicks or clout.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Ragebait is powerful but not inevitable. Sometimes, choosing <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to respond \u2014 or responding with curiosity or grace \u2014 is the most radical move we can make.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Next time you feel your blood boiling, pause. Ask: \u201cIs this content trying to make me a better citizen\u2014or just a more profitable pawn?\u201d Ragebaiters design their content to make you angry and exploit your emotions. Don\u2019t let them win! It can be hard, but reacting constructively \u2014 or not reacting at all \u2014 is the way to win against ragebait.
