Over the weekend, global tensions took a sharp and dangerous turn.<\/span><\/p>\n

The United States launched a major airstrike\u2014\u201cOperation Midnight Hammer\u201d\u2014targeting Iranian nuclear facilities in Fordow, Natanz, and Isfahan. Within hours, Iran responded by launching missiles at a U.S. base in Qatar. Fortunately, no casualties were reported. But the alarms went off around the world.<\/span><\/p>\n

Almost instantly, \u201cWW3\u201d started trending. Google searches for “draft age” skyrocketed. And already <\/span>record-high levels<\/span><\/a> of Islamophobia were exacerbated.<\/span><\/p>\n

Fear is understandable. War is terrifying. But what we do with our fear\u2014the stories we tell, the language we use, the assumptions we make\u2014matters just as much as what happens next.<\/span><\/p>\n

Whether you support U.S. involvement or not, in these times of heightened fear, we must be extra careful to avoid dehumanizing \u201cus vs. them\u201d mindsets (between left and right, or between Americans and Iranians) and misinformation designed to stoke those divisions. War often escalates when we give in to both.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n

Here’s how we can all help turn down the temperature.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Fear Fuels Division\u2014Unless We Stop It<\/b><\/h3>\n

Fear makes us tribal. It narrows our perspective, splits the world into \u201cus\u201d and \u201cthem,\u201d and convinces us that those who disagree are dangerous.<\/span><\/p>\n

In times of crisis, this thinking gets even more seductive. Some retreat into partisan corners, blaming the other side of the aisle. Others embrace a more global version of \u201cus vs. them,\u201d demonizing entire populations rather than the decisions of governments. It\u2019s easy to forget that many Iranians, like many Americans, have no say in military operations and want nothing to do with this conflict.<\/span><\/p>\n

This dehumanizing mindset isn\u2019t new\u2014it\u2019s the prelude to every war we\u2019ve ever fought. When we reduce people to caricatures or enemies, violence becomes easier to justify.<\/span><\/p>\n

That\u2019s why now is the time to resist it. Talk to people you disagree with\u2014yes, even now. Not to win, but to understand. Empathy is not a luxury in moments like this. It\u2019s a necessity.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Misinformation Loves a Crisis<\/b><\/h3>\n

In the first hours of any major event, facts are scarce and noise is abundant. Misinformation fills the void before facts can catch up\u2014and social media makes it worse.<\/span><\/p>\n

You\u2019ve probably seen out-of-context videos claiming to show the bombings. Or dramatic headlines announcing things that didn\u2019t happen. Or viral posts that are more ragebait than reporting.<\/span><\/p>\n

In a fog-of-war news cycle, ask more than \u201cIs this true?\u201d Ask: <\/span>Is this helping?<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n

Before you post, pause. Share information from reliable sources, not just opinions. And when you correct someone else, do it with grace. Shaming doesn\u2019t change minds\u2014compassion might.<\/span><\/p>\n

Sensationalism may drive clicks, but clarity saves lives. Let\u2019s choose the latter.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Our Words Matter\u2014More Than We Think<\/b><\/h3>\n

There\u2019s a kind of language that creeps in during global conflicts\u2014language that strips away humanity.<\/span><\/p>\n

\u201cThey only understand force.\u201d<\/span>
\n<\/span> \u201cThey\u2019re animals.\u201d<\/span>
\n<\/span> \u201cWipe them out.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n

We\u2019ve heard it before. It sounds strong, maybe even justified in the heat of the moment. But it\u2019s not strength. It\u2019s surrender. It\u2019s giving in to fear and rage instead of thinking clearly and acting wisely.<\/span><\/p>\n

This kind of rhetoric doesn\u2019t just appear in comment sections\u2014it\u2019s on TV, in political speeches, and often, in our own conversations. And it keeps the cycle going.<\/span><\/p>\n

When you talk about what\u2019s happening, speak as if people are listening\u2014because they are. Speak with care. Most Iranian civilians are not our enemies. Most Americans aren\u2019t either. Let\u2019s not forget that.<\/span><\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

What We Can Control<\/b><\/h3>\n

No one reading this is sitting at the Pentagon with their finger on the strike button. But all of us have influence\u2014on our families, our communities, our feeds, and our conversations.<\/span><\/p>\n

The path to war is paved with fear, division, dehumanization, and disinformation. If that\u2019s what takes us there, then the opposite\u2014curiosity, connection, clarity, and courage\u2014is what brings us back.<\/span><\/p>\n

You can help.<\/span><\/p>\n

Stay grounded. Stay informed. Talk to people, not at them. Seek truth over outrage. When fear tempts you to divide, be the person who reaches out.<\/span><\/p>\n

Because in moments like this, staying human is one of the most patriotic things we can do.<\/span><\/p>\n

When fear feels large enough, we start justifying our division. Instead of giving in, let\u2019s do what we wish our leaders did before hurling bombs at each other\u2014let\u2019s sit down and talk.<\/span><\/p>\n
